Winter vacation extended by three more
Half-term vacation starts this week with a break for students, office staff and government employees. This season also gives us the chance to take up more work than before as many industries are getting back on their feet after the pandemic. All these factors put our busy working life during the summer season in jeopardy. For some, it can be overwhelming when they feel like there is nothing left to do this week. In such situations, an additional vacation might help you find time to refresh. One thing that really matters though when looking for alternatives is if you have other commitments. If you haven’t taken any leave this year, then there is a possibility you will miss out on opportunities to spend time with family or friends. Your family and friends won’t mind if your absence from their lives lasts all weekend but if you are trying to carve out time for yourself, consider taking more vacations. You may also want to choose between domestic and international travel. It depends on where you stay and how much time you get for rest and relaxation or even meeting new people. Domestic travel is usually cheaper and offers more freedom to explore places. On the other hand, international travel means you are taking away time from business on a trip abroad while spending time at home. You can easily find flights that fly into major cities or towns and don’t cost too much. International travel can offer more flexibility and choices than domestic travel. International travel is sometimes best suited when you are travelling for business only. While choosing the type of travel is important, it’s equally important to know what the weather will be like in different parts of the world. A typical temperature and light winds can make traveling across regions easier or harder even for experienced travelers. When travelling on foot, remember to pack plenty of water along with sunscreen, hats and gloves. Do not forget to keep hydrated because unexpected rain can damage your shoes and clothing. A recent winter vacation was just one example where I had the opportunity to extend my regular breaks. My friend and I decided to try outdoor activities together. The day we went camping on a hilltop, snow fell heavily that evening and all the things that were familiar about campsites turned upside down. We both wanted to make the most of those hours by relaxing, reading books and enjoying good food. After a few hours on that mountain, we took turns cooking meals. There were times when two people could cook quickly enough; we needed to move around a bit. Our second night, we took over the kitchen table while everyone else went inside. Cooking was simple using ingredients found here and on Amazon (I don’t recommend buying everything on Amazon unless you use them) so there was no need for special tools. Just make sure to pack enough space and bring enough supplies. Sometimes you need help making dinner or doing dishes if you’re not used to doing them on your own. Having someone look after meals was nice because now I had the opportunity to cook alone and focus on reading instead of worrying about what to eat. Once we finished the meal, we sat down and listened to music. At this point, it was probably 3 am but I woke up early enough to finish reading a book I read recently. Reading gave me peace from thoughts about worries that kept popping up. Even at this late hour of midnight, it was still very quiet as birds chirped outside. The next morning, I still had a lot of energy. I read through several pages of the same book, enjoyed breakfast in bed and got dressed in clothes made from scratch. Of course, I didn’t bring snacks and drinks because of the cold weather. But the company of someone cooked the last supper and I cooked myself lunch. That part made me happy because I didn’t have to worry about anything. All it took was 20 minutes in silence watching birds chirping to complete the job. The next day was spent sleeping but waking up before 6 am allowed me extra time to catch some rays. Although these efforts didn’t pay off in terms of a beach vacation, being outdoors under the hot sun and feeling fresh air is an amazing way to unwind from daily worries. Summer can be tough for anyone including adults. Most weekends you’ll likely stay indoors either until dawn or go somewhere for coffee or tea to unwind before starting the workweek. During long days without adequate sleep, it becomes difficult to concentrate. With no choice but to continue working, you start feeling tired just from doing routine tasks. Being up at 5 or 6 am helps to rewire your brain so it’s ready to be refreshed. During the summer, you don’t really have to plan to relax. These trips are designed around the needs of its host families, local businesses, schools, or just for pleasure. As long as you enjoy nature and have an appetite for adventure, you can create time for leisurely pursuits. Whatever it takes, whether it’s biking on trails or walking by lakes, these short-term vacations can give you a sense of purpose and improve your health. Taking care of yourself is essential. It isn’t something you should neglect, especially in the midst of peak seasons. So take advantage of the chance to rest and recharge yourself for the remainder of the year.
